Reid Named To Butkus Award Watch List

CHICAGO – University of Utah linebacker Karene Reid has been named to the 2023 Butkus Award Preseason Watch List with the award annually going to the top linebacker in the country.
Reid is one of 51 linebackers on the list, a nod to the storied "51" pro jersey worn by the award's namesake, Dick Butkus. Reid is also on the preseason watch list for the Lott IMPACT Trophy as well as being named preseason All-Pac-12 by the league, Phil Steele, Pro Football Focus and Athlon Sports.
The American Fork, Utah, native has played in 24 career games at Utah with 20 starts after walking on the team in 2021. He earned All-Pac-12 honors in 2022 as a second-team selection after starting in all 14 games during Utah's second-straight Pac-12 title winning season.
He led the linebacker room with 72 tackles (9.5 TFL, 5.0 sacks) in 2022, also adding five passes defended (1 INT, 4 PBU) with a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Reid had a season-high 10 stops against Arizona State (1.5 TFL), also recording a season-best 2.0 TFL and a sack against Penn State in the Rose Bowl.
In 2021 as a true freshman, Reid recorded 44 tackles (2.0 TFL, 1.0 sack), two pass breakups and an interception. His breakout game came against Washington State where he posted a career-high 15 tackles (1.0 sack) and an interception to earn Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.
