Scouting N.C. State
The Wolfpack ended the 2022 season at .500 for the second consecutive year and only a narrow defeat in a penalty shootout against UCF kept them from moving on to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, which they reached in 2021. Excluding the 2020-21 campaign, N.C. State has reached the national postseason in each of the last six years.
Among the returners on the N.C. State roster are senior forward Jameese Joseph and senior goalkeeper Maria Echezarreta. Joseph finished 2022 in the top 10 in the ACC in goals and shots and she began her junior year by collecting points in each of her team's first four matches. Echezarreta's 94 saves were 17 more than anyone else in the conference and she racked up four shutouts as well.
All Time Against N.C. State
Thursday's fixture will be the first time these programs have ever met.
Scouting College of Charleston
The Cougars will be looking to continue their program's upward trajectory after going 8-7-1 in 2022, their first winning season since 2018. Those eight triumphs were nearly three times as many as they'd logged in their previous two seasons combined and included a four-match win streak in September in which they outscored the opposition 13-1. The Cougars also put together a 7-3-1 record on their home field.
The list of players coach Christian Michner will have at his disposal includes the team's leading goal scorer from 2022, Grace Powell, leading assist-getter Faith Slimmer, and both of the team's starting goalkeepers from the previous year, Savannah Barron and Katie Carrino. This group will be attempting to record C of C's first victory over a Power Five squad since they defeated N.C. State in 1997.
All Time Against College of Charleston
The Utes and the Cougars will be colliding for the first time ever on Sunday.
For Openers
In 28 season openers in the program's history, the Utes have compiled a 16-9-3 record and they also own an 8-5-3 mark when they've started the year on the road. Their most recent road win in a lid-lifter came in 2015, when they topped Marquette, 1-0. Utah will be striving for its first ever triumph when they've started a campaign on the east coast, as they've been defeated in each of their three previous attempts.
NCAA Tournament History
The Utes enter 2023 aiming to reach the NCAA Tournament for the ninth time in school history and the first time since 2019. Utah put together its best postseason finish in 2016, when they forged a path all the way to the Sweet 16.
By The Numbers
The list of players back in the fold for Hideki Nakada's club includes just about all of the team's statistical leaders from 2022.
Taliana Kaufusi, who piled up a team-high six goals, is back for her senior season, while assist leader
Ryann Cull has returned after collecting four helpers a season ago. Kaufusi also led the squad in shots in 2022 with 41, followed by fellow returners
Katie O'Kane, who collected 28, and
Courtney Brown, who posted 26.
In goal, all four of Utah's keepers,
Evelyn Vitali,
Kasey Wardle,
Megan Quiggle and
Taylor Prigge, are back for another season. No one on the roster collected more saves than Vitali's 48 in 2022, while Wardle crafted a 0.70 goals against average. Utah's keepers combined to record seven shutouts a season ago.
Senior Six
Utah's six-person senior class is comprised of
Courtney Brown,
Brooke Hale,
Katie O'Kane,
Taliana Kaufusi,
Megan Quiggle and
Ragan Vanschalkwyk. This group has combined to take the field in over 200 matches for the Utes and Brown is the one player remaining from the 2019 squad that reached the NCAA Tournament.
New Utes
Utah's 2023 roster includes seven new faces and that list of newcomers is comprised of freshmen
Kennedy Schoennauer,
Lilliah Blum,
Bella Woods,
Rylan Park,
Mia Becarevic and
Izzy Smith and sophomore transfer
Alex Schoenstadt.
Woods, Becarevic and Smith were all part of an Alta High School squad that made a run to the state playoffs in 2022, while Schoennauer helped her squad reach capture the CCA Division II Championship, Blum was named her conference's player of the year and Park was an all-league selection.
Schoenstadt played her freshman season with Ole Miss and helped the Rebels achieve a winning record, as well as record nine clean sheets.
Scanning the Schedule
The Utes are starting the season on the road for the third time in the last four campaigns and their road clashes with the Wolfpack and Cougars will be followed by a visit to Utah State.
