MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Courtney Brown and
Bella Woods both recorded multiple points to help lead the University of Utah women's soccer team to its first victory of the 2023 season, topping the College of Charleston Cougars by a count of 2-0 on Sunday at Ralph Lundy Field at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, S.C.
The Utes improve to 1-0-1 with the victory, while dropping the Cougars to 0-1-1.
"I'm really happy to get our first win of the season," said head coach Hideki Nakada. "Give credit to College of Charleston for how well they played us today. They put us under constant pressure and made it really difficult for us to play the way we wanted to and we struggled to get a hold of the game.
"A set piece can often be the difference maker and we were able to break the ice by capitalizing on a wonderful set-piece goal. This was not an easy trip, so I am really proud for us to be going home undefeated and I'm excited to get home to get ready for a massive in-state match against Utah State on Thursday."
Both sides spent the opening moments testing the other team's back line and the Cougars were responsible for the first two shots on goal, but
Kasey Wardle saved both to keep the match scoreless through the first 20 minutes.
In the 21st minute, a foul just outside the 18 gave Utah a free kick and
Katie O'Kane capitalized with a shot into the lower left corner of the net to put the visitors on the board first. Woods and Brown collected assists on the play, giving Woods points in each of her first two matches as a Ute.
Barely two minutes later, Brown tallied her first goal of the year to double her squad's lead. The senior from West Haven, Utah took a pass from
Alex Schoenstadt, raced up the left side of the pitch into the box and sent a right-footed shot past the keeper for a 2-0 advantage. For Schoenstadt, this went down as her first Utah point, while Woods posted another helper to become the first Ute to snag multiples assists in a match since March 12, 2021, when Brown accomplished that feat. That two-goal edge was still intact when the teams reached halftime.
In the second half, the Utes and new goalkeeper
Evelyn Vitali set about protecting their lead. The Cougars racked up six total shots in the final period, four which were on frame, but Vitali stopped each one, including a pair of tries in the last five minutes. Vitali and Wardle combined to make six saves in the match to preserve Utah's first clean sheet and first victory of 2023.
