LOGAN, Utah – Taliana Kaufusi's 80th minute goal combined with some heroic defense to grant the University of Utah women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over the Utah State Aggies on Thursday evening at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field in Logan, Utah.
The Utes are now 2-0-1, the second straight season in which they've reached that record after three matches. This makes the first time the Utes have been undefeated through three matches in consecutive years since they achieved that feat 2014 and 2015.
"Today was a fantastic result on the road and we are happy with another shutout," said head coach
Hideki Nakada. "It was a tough environment to play in and it demanded so much out of our players and I am really proud of them for finding a way to come out on top.
"I'm really looking forward to our home opener on Sunday and it will be our biggest test yet hosting one of the top teams in the country in Clemson."
The Utes and Aggies combined for 11 total shots in the first half, but each side could only manage one on-target effort as both defenses held firm.
Katie O'Kane led all players with three shots, but the match remained a scoreless draw at the break.
USU quickly applied pressure in the second period but had multiple scoring opportunities turned away by Utah's defense. The Aggies' first chance of the second half came on a free kick in the 49th minute, but
Kasey Wardle was in position to make her second save of the day.
Five minutes later, the home team had their best opportunity to get on the board, only for the Utes to again hold fast. Summer Diamond made a deep run down left side of field and sent a cross into the box that found Bizzy Arevalo into front of the net just outside the six-yard box. Arevalo's effort never crossed the line, however, thanks to defender
Maryn Granger, who was on the spot to block the shot and keep the match level.
It wasn't until the 80th minute that the Utes broke through for the only goal of the evening. Following a stoppage, play resumed with USU in possession near midfield, but
Lilliah Blum stole the ball and found Kaufusi with a pass upfield. Utah's senior forward then executed a perfect give-and-go with
Kennedy Schoennauer that put Kaufusi in on goal and her right-footed shot beat the keeper to put the visitors on the board.
The Utah defense clamped down after their score and allowed the Aggies only a single corner kick and no shots in the final 10 minutes. Wardle finished with three saves to lock down her team's second straight clean sheet.
