LOGAN, Utah – Utah Volleyball fell to the Utah State Aggies on Wednesday night in three sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-22) at the Wayne Estes Center. Freshman
Kamryn Gibadlo reached double-digit kills for the first time of her young Ute career.
The first set started off competitive as neither team held a lead more than two points until Utah State rattled off a 5-0 run to pull ahead 22-17. After a block from
Viktoria Wahlgren and
KJ Burgess, followed by an Aggie error, the Utes pulled within three points (20-23), but couldn't complete the comeback as Utah State scored consecutive points to win the first set.
Although Utah State hit just .179, the Utes were limited to a .034 clip in the opening set.
Kamryn Gibadlo recorded five kills to lead the team, but only one other Ute hitter managed to record a kill in the first set.
Utah used a 6-1 run in the second set to pull ahead 9-7 after trailing to start. Utah State managed to cut away at the lead and later took a 17-13, using a 5-1 run. Later trailing 19-15, Utah scored three in a row to force a timeout with the Aggie lead at just one point. The teams traded points out of the break until Utah used an attack error from the Aggies, followed by a block from
Amelia Van Der Werff, to tie the set 21-21.
Utah State countered with back-to-back points of their own, which sent the teams into a timeout called by the Utes. Utah scored out of the timeout, but the Aggies managed to take the set 25-22 the following plays from a block and then a Ute hitting error.
The Utes looked to change momentum in the third set and jumped out to a 9-4 lead. Later holding on to a 12-9 lead, Utah gave up a 4-1 run to see the set become tied 13-13. Utah countered with its own 4-1 run to regain a lead, 17-14. The runs continued as the Aggies scored three in a row, but the Utes followed with consecutive points once again.
After pushing out to a 19-17 lead, Utah let the lead slip away as Utah State scored three quick points to push ahead. A kill from Gibadlo tied the set 21-21, but another 3-0 run from Utah State gave the home team their first match point (24-21). A service error extended the match, but the Aggies would take the set from a kill and win 25-22 in the third. Utah hit .200 in the set as its best of the day, but Utah State hit at a .324 clip to power past the Utes.
Gibadlo posted her first career match with double-digit kills on Wednesday night after tallying 12 kills to lead the team. Burgess added six kills on .333 hitting, while Van Der Werff recorded five kills.
Viktoria Wahlgren totaled 23 assists, seven digs, and a team-high three blocks. Defensively,
Vanessa Ramirez recorded nine digs and
Kaieva Johnson added eight.
