INDIANAPOLIS – Utah men's basketball center
Branden Carlson was 1-of-5 players named USBWA Oscar Robertson National Players of the Week on Wednesday the association announced.
Carlson becomes just the second Runnin' Ute to earn this weekly award, joining Jakob Poeltl – who was named national player of the week back on Jan. 24, 2016. It's also the third time this season a player from the Pac-12 has been honored with the award.
The South Jordan native had a spectacular weekend to help the Utes extend their win-streak to eight with a sweep of the Washington schools. Carlson opened the weekend scoring 19 points on eight rebounds with five assists and five blocks in Utah's routing of the Cougs 80-58.
He then willed Utah back from a 15-point deficit, scoring 27 of his career-high 34 points in the second-half – including 19 of Utah's 28 points in the final 9:31 minutes. The 7-footer also dished out a career-high seven assists that game – which led to 17 points for his teammates. His 27 second-half points is tied with three other players for the sixth-most points scored in a half this season and is just 1-of-22 players this season to score 25-plus points in a single half.
Wednesday's award comes after being named Pac-12 Player of the Week for the third time in his career earlier this week.
Carlson and the Runnin' Utes put their eight-game win-streak on the line this Thursday, Jan. 4, at 9 p.m. (MT) when they battle Arizona State in Tempe on ESPN2 with Dave Feldman and Corey Williams on the call.
