IRVING, Texas – After her first career goal at Arizona State,
Katie Callaway was named Big 12 Freshman Player of the Week the conference announced Wednesday.
Callaway earned her first point of the night with an assist to senior midfielder
Katie O'Kane's goal. Taking control after a corner kick, the Woodstock, Ga. native found the ball on the right side of the attacking area. With a cross to O'Kane, the ball was booted to the back of the net for the Ute's third goal of the night.
The freshman then solidified the win for Utah with a goal in the 81
st minute, bumping the Sun Devil's deficit to 4-1. A couple of perfect passes by teammates
Taliana Kaufusi and
Lilliah Blum set up
Bella Woods for a cross into the box that was headed on target by Callaway for the final tally of the night. It went into the books as the freshman's first collegiate goal.
The contributions from the freshman midfielder, pushed the Utes to a 4-1 win over the Sun Devils. Four goals is twice as many as ASU had allowed in any match in 2024 before Friday, and it's the highest total they've allowed at home since a 4-3 defeat against UCLA in 2021.
Callaway and her teammates are traveling to take on both Kansas rivals this week, they'll pay a visit to the Kansas State Wildcats on Thursday night for a 6 p.m. match at Buser Family Park, and then move over to the Kansas Jayhawks for a Sunday morning match at 12 p.m. in Lawrence, Kan.
