A native of Sandy, Utah, Ashman collected honors earlier this week, being named to the NCBWA Preseason All-America Third Team. Ashman made tremendous strides as a sophomore in 2023, achieving Pac-12 All-Conference honors after the season.
He was also one of seven Pac-12 pitchers named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List. Entering the 2024 season, D1Baseball.com lists Ashman as the Pac-12's No. 23 prospect for the MLB Draft.
He took the mound for 23 appearances last season, all in relief, tallying nine saves and posting a 3.63 ERA in 34.2 innings pitched. He had 38 strikeouts and allowed just five walks. Ashman's nine saves finished second in the Pac-12 and 24th nationally, while also tying for the second-most in recorded program history at Utah.
He ranks tied for fifth in program history with nine career saves (all in 2023) and needs eight more to tie Tyler Wagner for the program career record (17 from 2010-12).
Among the offensive leaders in the lineup, Clarkson returns after having his strongest season as a Ute in 2023. The Gilbert, Arizona, native started all 55 games a year ago and was named Pac-12 All-Conference Honorable Mention. He reset career-highs in every major offensive category including batting average (.301), slugging (.628), on-base percentage (.464), runs scored (56), hits (59), doubles (18), home runs (14), RBI (45), and walks (48).
Clarkson led the team at the dish taking 48 walks and sending 14 balls over the fence, finishing ranked 4th and 14th in the conference, respectively. He became a record-setter last season as his 14 home runs were the most for a Ute in the Pac-12 era and the most since C.J. Cron's 15 blasts in 2011. Meanwhile, his 48 walks tied the program's single-season record, first set by Michael Heideman in 1997.
He recorded two multi-homer games, including a non-conference win at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Not only did Clarkson log five RBI that day, he did so amidst 2.2 innings of shutout and hit-free ball on the mound. He hit another pair of home runs later in the season during a comeback win vs. USC. Defensively, he was error-free on 64 outfield chances and contributed an assist.
While he primarily contributed in the outfield, the fifth-year Ute made seven pitching appearances, totaling a 1-1 record in 14.2 innings while striking out eight batters.
