LAS VEGAS –
Branden Carlson of Utah men's basketball was named First-Team All-Pac-12 for the second-straight year while newcomer
Deivon Smith was an honorable mention selection by the league's head coaches as the Pac-12 Conference announced end of season awards on Tuesday ahead of the final Pac-12 Tournament.
Â
BC (2022, 23, 24) becomes the only player in Utah history to earn three All-Pac-12 honors and joins Delon Wright (2014, 15) as the only other Runnin' Ute to earn back-to-back first-team selections. He also becomes the 12th player in Pac-12 history since the turn of the century to earn three all-conference selections with a second-team selection in 2022 and back-to-back first-team accolades the last two seasons.
Â
Carlson – who had his best season as a collegian – finished Pac-12 play averaging 17.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.8 blocks to lead the Utes in three of the four categories. Meanwhile, his 35 assists in league play was good for third on the team to go with his .489 shooting clip – which was second on the team as well among players with at least 100 field-goal attempts.
Â
The South Jordan native finished league action tied for second in blocks (35), sixth in scoring (17.9), sixth in rebounding (7.3) and tied for ninth in 3-point field-goals made (42). His 40 points at Oregon State was the most by any player in a conference game this season. Meanwhile, his three games of 30-plus points in Pac-12 play was most by any player this season as well.
Â
In his first season with the Runnin' Utes, Smith turned heads with his three triple-doubles in Pac-12 play – which was the most since Andre Iguodala (3) did it in 2003-04. It's also just the third time in the history of the Pac-12 that a player has had three triple-doubles in a season with Smith and Iguodala trailing Jason Kidd – who had four back in 1993-94. The Decatur, Ga., product finished the season with nine double-doubles – which is tied for third-most in league play.
Â
Smith was second on the team in scoring during Pac-12 action, scoring 13.6 points per game while also averaging 6.1 rebounds and 7.1 assists. His 21 steals were also second on the team behind
Gabe Madsen (27). He finished conference with seven-straight double-digit game – including three double-doubles and a triple-double during that final stretch.
Â
He also led the Conference of Champions with 142 assists in 20 league games while his 7.1 assists average was also tops among all players in Pac-12 play.
