SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men's basketball team will make its first postseason appearance since 2018 as it participates in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) as the No. 2-seed the committee announced Sunday evening and will play host to UC Irvine in the first round of the NIT on Tuesday, March 19, at 9 p.m. (MDT) on ESPN2 inside the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
Tickets for the NIT will be $20 for adults and $10 for students and youth tickets in the lower bowl. Men's basketball season ticket holders will have priority on seat selection until NOON on Monday, March 18. The Runnin' Utes are 14-2 this season inside the Huntsman Center and went 2-0 at home the last time it hosted the NIT. This will be Utah's 15th appearance in the NIT all-time with an overall record of 15-13. Of those 28 games played in the NIT, Utah is 4-2 when playing opening round games at home.
Utah has had a lot of history with the NIT having won it back in 1947 to go along with four semifinal appearances in the program's history (1947, 1974, 1992, 2018). Of those four semifinal appearances, the Runnin' Utes are 1-2 all-time in the championship game.
The Runnin' Utes enter the NIT 19-14 overall on the year – the most wins since 2017-18 when it last went to NIT Championship game inside Madison Square Garden. Utah finished the final Pac-12 regular-season 9-11 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.
Utah is 9-0 all-time and 6-0 at home against UC Irvine with the last meeting between the two programs occurring back on Dec. 27, 2008, a 60-52 affair in favor of the Utes in Irvine, Calif.
The two-time Big West Regular-Season Champions went 24-9 overall this season and 17-3 in conference action. The top-seeded Anteaters fell in their semifinal match-up against Long Beach State 83-79 – who wound up being the eventual tournament champions.
UCI is led by head coach Russell Turner, who is in his 14th seasons at the helm with an overall record of 289-179 – including nine seasons with 20-plus wins. The 2023-24 campaign will serve as the fourth NIT appearance for UCI under Turner and the second in as a many seasons. UCI fell in the first round of the NIT last season to top-seeded Oregon 84-58.
