ST. GEORGE, Utah –
Sarah Ladd fired the ninth perfect game in program history,
Haley Denning became the program's all-time leader in career hits and the University of Utah softball team pushed its win streak to five straight by downing the Wisconsin Badgers, 12-1, and the Utah Tech Trailblazers, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at Karl Brooks Field in St. George, Utah.
By rattling off five-in-a-row, the Utes have improved their record to 12-6.
"Today was a magical day," said coach Amy Hogue. "We had all three facets of our game, which gives us the momentum we need going into conference this next weekend. Our shutdown defense had a solid day behind Mariah and Sarah's dominant performances, while our offense kick-started several rallies to keep our momentum through two games.
"It was a proud moment as a coach to see Haley Denning's & Sarah Ladd's hard work pay off. Their dedication to their craft, even outside of team practice, is truly exceptional. I'm not at all surprised to see them achieve such great accomplishments."
Utah vs. Wisconsin
The Utes seized the initiative from the Badgers immediately in their first matchup of the day and never looked back. Three consecutive singles loaded the bases to get the game started and a walk to
Kaylah Nelsen forced in the day's first run. The next hitter was
Julia Jimenez, who ripped a double into left-center that cleared the bases and increased the Utes' advantage to four. An RBI single off the bat of
Sophie Jacquez and a run-scoring groundout by
Emily Capobianco capped off a six-run rally in the top of the first.
In the second inning, the Utes resumed their onslaught, again loading the bases with nobody out as a result of three straight singles. Jimenez picked up her fourth RBI of the day with a run-scoring safety to center and Jacquez followed with one of her own. Utah saw its lead grow to 9-0 two batters later on a fielder's choice.
An RBI single by Nelsen in the third swelled the difference between the clubs to 10-0 and, after the Badgers tallied a run in their half of the third, an
Abby Dayton RBI groundout and a run-scoring infield hit courtesy of
Reese Lee closed out the scoring. In the circle,
Mariah Lopez held Wisconsin to just one run on four hits through 4 2/3 innings for her fourth win.
It was during that top of the fifth that Denning picked up the 264th hit of her Utah career, reaching on an infield hit that made her Utah's all-time leader in that category. The Arizona native needed only 17 games in 2024 to pick up the 28 hits required to overtake the previous record holder, Hannah Flippen, who spent 2014-17 piling up 263 hits for the Utes. Denning also ended the day with a .396 career average, which, for the moment, puts her at the top of the school's all-time rankings in that category.
Utah vs. Utah Tech
Ladd's spotless performance at the expense of Utah Tech was just the fourth seven-inning perfect game thrown by a Ute in school history and the first since Ali Andrus-Sagas in 1995. Overall, it is Utah's first perfect performance since Miranda Viramontes in 2017.
The senior left-hander needed only 94 pitches to retire all 21 hitters she faced and 60 of those tosses were strikes. Ladd also avoided issuing a walk despite finding herself in a three-ball count six times, but she found a way to make a pitch to get an out in each instance. In three of the final five innings, the California native prevented the Trailblazers from hitting the ball out of the infield, including the seventh, which she breezed through by inducing a popup, a ground ball to second and a strikeout to complete her masterpiece. Ladd is also the first Pac-12 hurler to complete seven perfect innings since Miranda Elish of Oregon in 2018.
Very little run support was needed for Utah's starter, but the Utes were able to tally five runs, starting with a
Shonty Passi RBI double in the third, followed one frame later by a
Sophie Jacquez double that brought in Jimenez.
Aliya Belarde singled in a run in the fifth and two more Utes found their way home in the seventh, one of which scored on Belarde's fourth knock of the day. The rest was taken care of by
Sarah Ladd.
