SALT LAKE CITY – Utah men's basketball guard
Deivon Smith was named Pac-12 Player of the Week after leading the Runnin' Utes to a sweep of the Bay Area schools at home for the sixth time while averaging 15.5 points, 7.0 rebounds and 11.5 assists to close out the home slate 14-2 in 2023-24.
Â
Smith becomes just the fourth Utah player to win multiple weekly honors in a season, joining
Branden Carlson, Timmy Allen and Jakob Poeltl. Carlson also achieved the feat this season with two of his own while Allen earned it back in 2019-20 and Poeltl winning four back in 2015-16. In total, Smith becomes just the fifth Ute in the Pac-12 Era to garner multiple player of the week honors in his career and joins Poeltl (4), Carlson (3), Timmy Allen (2) and Delon Wright (2).
Â
Utah is the first program since Oregon (2019-20) to have had two players with multiple player of the week accolades in the same season. UCLA (2016-17), Cal (2012-13) and Arizona (2011-12) also did it in years prior in the Pac-12 Era.
Â
In the first game of the week against Stanford, Smith recorded his third triple-double of the season which was also his second time doing so against the Cardinal this season with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists en route to Utah's 89-65 victory. The 6-1 guard carved up the Cardinal defense all night for his season-high 13 assists while also being efficient on the floor, knocking down 5-of-8.
Â
His third triple-double made him just the third player in Pac-12 history with three-plus in a single-season joining Jason Kidd (4; 1993-94) and Andre Iguodala (1993-94). In addition, Smith is just the fourth player from a major conference to record three or more triple-doubles in a season according to the NCAA record book joining Kidd (Cal), Iguodala (Arizona) and LSU's Shaquille O'Neill (3; 1991-92).
Â
Smith followed up on Saturday against Cal with a double-double – scoring 18 points with 4 rebounds and 10 assists on 6-of-8 shooting to help the Utes send off their seniors with an 88-59 victory.
Â
Utah will close out the regular-season this weekend on the road against the Oregon schools with a top-4 seed in the Pac-12 Tournament still a possibility. The Utes will first face Oregon State on Thursday, March 7, at 9 p.m. (MT) on ESPNU before facing Oregon to finish out the year on Saturday, March 9, at 5 p.m. (MT) on Pac-12 Networks.
