PULLMAN, Wash. – Kai Roberts hit his team-leading third home run and later plated the winning run at Washington State on Saturday, propelling Utah to its first conference win of the season.
Utah stopped a three-game skid with a 5-4 victory, after trailing 4-1 through the first five innings of play. The Utes then found their bats against WSU by scoring five runs between the sixth and eighth frames.
Core Jackson and Roberts each went 2-for-4; both had a double and Roberts drove in two runs.
Karson Bodily had his first triple of the season as well.
On the mound,
Bryson Van Sickle faced heat early, allowing four runs through the first four innings, but later stabilized in the fifth and sixth innings. The bullpen shined to close out the game, moving to four different arms over the final three innings. It included a one-inning outing for
Jaden Harris, who earned the win (2-0).
The bullpen allowed only a base hit and two walks, while
Micah Ashman four of the six batters he faced on the way to his third save of the season.
The Cougars used their momentum from game one of the series, scoring a run in each of the first two innings. Roberts sparked the Utah offense in the fourth inning, smashing a solo home run to right field and picking up the first Ute hit. Responding quickly, Washington State plated two runs in the bottom half of the fourth inning, stretching its lead to 4-1.
The rest of the game belonged to Utah as Jackson doubled home
Bruer Webster after a sixth-inning leadoff single to cut the deficit to two runs. In his final inning of work, Van Sickle worked around a leadoff single and a hit-by-pitch to record back-to-back shutout innings.
The Utes stayed hot in the seventh as
Drake Digiorno worked a one-out walk and later stole second for his fourth stolen bag of the season.
Karson Bodily drove Digiorno home with a triple down the right field line and would score from an RBI groundout by
Michael Davinni to tie the game, 4-4.
Jackson Elder,
Ernesto Lugo-Canchola, and Harris all pitched in the seventh inning and Harris shut down a bases-loaded threat from Washington State to keep the game level.
Roberts added the final run of the game, doubling home Jackson with a rocket to left field with two-outs and pushing Utah six outs away from victory.
Ashman entered in the eighth inning to try to slam the door on the Cougars with a five-out save. The junior made his seventh appearance and prevented any movement for Washington State, striking out one batter in the eighth before striking out the side in the ninth. Ashman picked up his third save of the year, and has yet to allow a run in seven innings of work.
