SAN FRANCISCO – The Pac-12 Conference announced on Monday that Utah left-handed pitcher
Bryson Van Sickle has been named the league's Pitcher of the Week. Van Sickle, a native of Eagle Mountain, Utah, tossed a complete game this past Friday as Utah picked up a 6-1 win over Arizona.
Â
He is the first Utah arm to win two Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week awards since the Utes joined the league. His other nod came on April 15.
Â
Van Sickle became the first Utah pitcher since 2008 to throw multiple complete games in a season. He surrendered just a run on three hits and a pair of walks while striking out eight Wildcats; his second straight outing with eight K's.
Â
He allowed only a walk in the first 3.2 innings of the game, then worked around a two-out triple to get out of the fourth inning still in a scoreless game. The leadoff batter never reached in nine innings and Arizona only had two hits with two outs.
Â
The outing lowered his ERA to 2.80 overall (ranking second in the Pac-12) and 2.43 in conference (ranking third in the Pac-12 and second among starters). It was Van Sickle's ninth start this season and sixth in a row of six-plus innings; Utah is 7-2 in those games.
