SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Baseball team has an All-American as left-handed pitcher
Bryson Van Sickle was announced as a Third Team honoree by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) on Friday.
He is the first Ute to be named an All-American since Oliver Dunn was recognized in 2019, and the first pitcher to be so named in the recorded history of the Utah Baseball program. It comes after Van Sickle was named ABCA All-Region First Team earlier this week.
Van Sickle—who grew up about an hour South of campus in Eagle Mountain, Utah—made 15 starts this past season. He finished with a 5-1 record, 2.67 ERA and 69 strikeouts. The Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year totaled 94.1 innings, the most of any arm in the league when the postseason began.
His ERA led the conference; it ranks No. 12 in the nation entering the Men's College World Series (which begins later today). In conference play, Van Sickle's 2.44 ERA ranked second and was narrowly short of Oregon State's Aiden May for the lead.
He was one of only two Pac-12 pitchers to toss multiple complete games this season and just seven across all Power Conference teams. It made Van Sickle the first Ute since 2008 to go the distance multiple times in the same season.
Van Sickle moved into the Friday spot in the Utah rotation in early April; over his next eight outings he delivered six quality starts. It included an April 12 "Maddux" at Arizona State—that is, a complete game shutout on less than 100 pitches. He needed just 82 pitches to three-hit the Sun Devils that night, striking out eight and walking none. ASU never got the leadoff man aboard or put a runner in scoring position.
Then in May, he put on another three-hit complete game against eventual Pac-12 Champion Arizona. He allowed just one run in that matinee win over the Wildcats and tied his season-high with eight strikeouts.
He was part of a pitching staff that lowered its ERA by more than two runs from the 2023 season.
As a team, the Utes recorded 33 wins during the 2024 season—tied for the second-most in program history. The team had for Pac-12 All-Conference First Team selections, tying the most by the program in the Pac-12 era. Late in April, the Utes entered the national rankings with the No. 25 spot in the D1Baseball.com poll. It was the first time that Utah has been ranked in any of the five current major polls.
