IRVING, Texas – Coming off Utah Football's road win over Oklahoma State, senior running back
Micah Bernard and freshman quarterback
Isaac Wilson were recognized on Monday by the Big 12 Conference with weekly awards. Bernard was voted the league's Offensive Player of the Week while Wilson was named Newcomer of the Week—the pair are the first-ever Big 12 award winners for the Utes.
Â
Bernard set career-highs in Utah's victory over the Cowboys with 25 carries and 182 rushing yards—the latter the most by any Big 12 player this past weekend and second-most in the league all season. His 7.3 yards per carry also led the league this week among all players with at least 10 rushing attempts. The performance gave Bernard his third straight 100-yard rushing game and fifth of his career. He is the first Utah player since Ty Jordan in 2020 to rush for 100 yards in three straight games.
Â
His 182 rushing yards were the most by a Ute since 2019, and included 119 yards in the second half. He logged five different runs of 10-plus yards, including breaking multiple tackles on a 62-yard scamper down the sideline that set up a second-half field goal. Bernard ranks second in the Big 12 this season with 6.91 yards per carry and third with 114 yards per game.
Â
The rookie
Wilson made his second straight start at quarterback, passing 17-of-29 for 207 yards (12.2 yards/completion) and a touchdown. He was unfazed by receiving the starting nod minutes prior to kickoff, becoming the first Utah true freshman starting quarterback in recorded program history to beat an AP-ranked team, and just the fourth to make multiple starts as a true freshman.
Â
Wilson ranked third in the Big 12 (leading all freshmen) in ESPN's QBR for the week with a rating of 86.2. He had six completions of 15-plus yards, totaling 140 yards on those plays. It included two third down plays and a late 45-yard touchdown heave to tight end
Brant Kuithe—ultimately the difference in the game. Wilson also had six rushing attempts on the day, including two fourth-down keepers for first downs, as well as a career-long 48-yard hustle down the sideline in the third quarter.
Â
On third downs, Wilson was 4-for-7 passing for 43 yards. He is the second true freshman starter in Utah history to pass for 200-plus yards in his first two starts, and ranks second among Big 12 freshmen in passing efficiency for the season (122.8).
UP NEXT
The Utes return to Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 28 when they host the Arizona Wildcats. The game is set for an 8:15 p.m. MT kick on ESPN.
