First Soccer Meeting with LSU ends in Draw

The Utes score in the ninth minute for early lead for the fourth time this season
BATON ROUGE, La. - The University of Utah soccer program draws with the LSU Tigers 1-1, in a hard fought battle at a rainy LSU Soccer Stadium on Thursday night.
The first matchup between the Utes and the Tigers proved to be a hard physical fight as 32 fouls were tallied and three yellow cards were administered.
"It was a valuable result on the road against a quality LSU team in a really difficult condition", said head coach Hideki Nakada. "I was happy with the way we started the game and scored a great team goal."
Graduate forward Taliana Kaufusi continued the ten-minute streak for the Utes with a goal in the ninth minute. This marks the fourth of five games that Utah finds the net under the ten minute mark, Kaufusi accounting for three of the successes.
Two firsts occurred for the Utes, redshirt freshman Bella Woods tallied her first assist of the season to help Kaufusi's outcome and junior midfielder Brooklyn Blaylock marked her first shot of the season in the 65th minute.
"We were on our heels for a lot of the second half," said Nakada, "We have to learn to put away our chances in these tight games, but I am proud of our team for withstanding LSU's pressure in their tough environment."
Utah played an aggressive game in the first half, outdoing LSU on the pitch. But LSU came out of halftime with new energy, with junior forward Sage Glover scoring her first goal of the season in the 46th minute of the match.
Utah was outshot for the second time this season, 19-8. The Tigers had multiple chances to score in the second half, but their shots were consistently high-- out of their 19 shots, only six were on goal.
With her second start in the goal for the Utes, junior Erin Gibbs, collected five saves, tying her season best from Aug. 15 against Gonzaga.
"There were many learning moments from this match and we will use those to get better and especially to get ready for Sunday against UVU," said Nakada.

Utah makes their way back home to Ute Field to take on Utah Valley University on Sunday at 7 p.m.
