Ficklin tabbed Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week; offensive line honored for standout performance
IRVING, Texas — The Utah football team claimed three Big 12 Conference weekly awards on Monday. Quarterback Byrd Ficklin is both the Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week, while Utah also has taken home Offensive Line of the Week, as announced by the league office.
Â
Making his first collegiate start, Ficklin rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries, while completing 10-of-22 passes for 140 yards and two scores through the air. He set the tone for the evening early on, breaking through for a 63-yard rushing touchdown on just the second play of the game. Ficklin accounted for 291 total yards for the game, with his 151 on the ground going as the most by a Utah quarterback since at least 1996.
Â
The freshman became one of just five Utah quarterbacks since 1995 to both pass and rush for 100 yards in a game. It came on the same night that Ficklin became the sixth true freshman in recorded Utah history to start a game at QB.
Â
It wouldn't have been possible without the guys in the trenches, who helped the Utes rack up 587 total yards of offense—marking the fourth time this season that the team eclipsed 500 total yards. It was a season-high and the most for the team since recording 662 yards in the Colorado game on Nov. 26, 2022. Utah also rushed for 422 yards, the seventh-highest all-time and the most since Nov. 5, 2021 in a win at Stanford (441). The offensive line allowed just one sack on the evening.
Â
It's the third time this season Utah's offensive line has been honored by the Big 12 and second time the Utes have taken Offensive Player of the Week. Devon Dampier was selected by the conference after Utah's season-opening win at UCLA. Â
