SALT LAKE CITY – Longtime Utah Jazz public address announcer Dan Roberts returns home to where it all started as the newest public address announcer at Runnin' Utes games.
"We are pleased to welcome Dan Roberts back as our public address announcer for Runnin' Utes games," said Deputy Athletics Director/Chief Revenue Officer
Patrick Nowlin. "A household name among Utahns, Dan's return to the Jon M. Huntsman Center will further elevate the gameday experience for our fans this season."
Roberts, who spent 46 seasons with the Utah Jazz since they arrived in Salt Lake City, will once again have his voice echo throughout the Jon M. Huntsman Center.
"I'm honored and excited to be back home with the Runnin' Utes where it all started," Roberts said of his return.
He got his start in the spring of 1970, announcing for the Utah Stars – which was then playing in the ABA – and would do so until the team folded in 1975.
Shortly thereafter, former Utah head men's basketball Jerry Pimm reached out to Roberts about becoming the new PA for the program. Roberts would go on to call games for the Runnin' Utes from 1975-79 before starting his tenure with the Jazz.
In four seasons, Roberts had the opportunity to announce some Runnin' Ute legends in Tom Chambers, Danny Vranes and Jeff Judkins in what was then called the Special Events Center. His time on the Hill was capped off when he announced the NCAA Championship game between Michigan State and Indiana State – which ultimately began the rivalry between basketball legends Magic Johnson and Larry Bird. To this day, that National Championship game still stands as the highest rated televised NCAA basketball game.
Roberts' tenure with the Jazz saw him call 2,135 games that included two NBA Finals games (1997, 1998) and two NBA All-Star games (1993, 2023). Roberts was also on the mic when John Stockton broke both the NBA all-time assists and all-time steals record.
Fans will once again hear Roberts' voice echo through the Jon M. Huntsman Center beginning on Friday, Oct. 17, when the Runnin' Utes take the floor for the first time under first-year head coach
Alex Jensen – a Runnin' Ute legend himself – against Nevada at 7 p.m. (MDT). Admission is FREE for all fans with general admission seating in both the lower and upper bowl.
