SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Utes women's basketball team will open regular season play against the Sioux Falls Cougars in a Monday matinee matchup in the annual Future Scholars Kids Game at 11 a.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

LAST TIME OUT
The Utes opened their season with an exhibition match Oct. 27 night against Western Colorado. Utah came away with a 90-56 victory. The Utes had five double figure performances and were led by Reece Ross 13 points including 6-of-6 from the line.
LA Sneed had 12 points during the matchup and went 6-of-9 from the field. In addition to Ross and Sneed,
Maty Wilke,
Evelina Otto and
Grace Foster all scored ten points.
THE UTES
Utah returns four key contributors from the 2024-25 season including
Maty Wilke,
Samantha Crispe,
Brooke Walker and
Reese Ross. This year the Utes welcome back
Lani White who played at Utah for her freshman and sophomore seasons. White spent her junior season at Virginia Tech but has returned to finish her collegiate career where she started it all, as a Ute. The Utes welcome one true transfer in
Kamryn Mafua and four freshmen in
LA Sneed,
Ella Todd,
Avery Hjelmstad and
Evelina Otto.
THE KEY IS WILKE
Maty Wilke is Utah's top returner. She finished last season just shy of the elite 50/40/90 status. Wilke shot 46.7% from the field, 42.9% from three and 95% from the line. She was fourth on the team in scoring averaging 9.2 points per game. Wilke finished the season third on the team in made three-pointers with 57 on the year. She averaged 2.2 rebounds, posted 62 assists and 34 steals. She played in 30 games for the Utes and started in six. Wilke has 879 total points in her collegiate career and is well on her way to the exclusive 1,000 point club.
In the exhibition match against Western Colorado, Wilke put up 10 points with a block, a steal and 2 assists.
HEAD COACH GAVIN PETERSEN
Petersen enters his second season and first full season as head coach. He was named the head coach of the Utah women's basketball team on Nov. 19, 2024 just four games into the 2024-25 season. He has a 19-8 record in his career. Petersen became the fastest coach in program history to get a Top-10 victory when he led the Utes to a 78-67 win over No. 3 Notre Dame (11/30/24). He brings 23 seasons of college coaching experience to the role, he is in his 11th season overall with the Utes and spent the previous five years as associate head coach under Lynne Roberts.
Petersen has been a part of the staff that has led the Utes to seven postseason appearances—including four NCAA tournaments and a trip to the Sweet Sixteen—and five 20-win seasons, as well as regular appearances in the AP Top 25.
SCOUTING SIOUX FALLS
The Sioux Falls Cougars held a 17-14 overall record during the 2024-2025 season and went 12-10 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The Cougars' leading scorer returns in Kami Wadsworth, a junior who started in all 31 games and averaged 18.9 points per game and shot 48.3% from the field. The Cougars also return sophomore and the 2024-25 NSIC Freshman of the Year, Alexis Rose. Rose averaged10.3 points per game and shot 41.1% from the field.
Travis Traphagen is the head coach for Sioux Falls and is entering his 18
th season with the Cougars. Traphagen has an all-time record of 301-187.
This will be the first matchup between the Utah Utes and the Sioux Falls Cougars.
UP NEXT
Utah will face back-to-back in-state rivals first heading up north to face Utah State on Nov. 7 and then will return home to the Huntsman Center to host the Wolverines of Utah Valley on Nov. 11 at 7 p.m.
