SAN DIEGO – The Utah baseball team bounced back on Monday afternoon, taking down Long Beach State by a 5-1 score in a neutral-site game at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Utes improved to 7-1 with the victory, holding that record through eight games for the second straight season.
It was a total team win; everyone in the lineup reached base safely and four Utes contributed on the mound during a staff day for the club.
Easton Jones (1-0) earned his first collegiate win with three innings of shutout ball, following starter
Lucas Boesen.
Dillon Fine came on in the sixth inning before
Jackson Elder closed out the final three frames, earning his first collegiate save. The pitching staff did not allow an earned run as Utah's ERA dropped to 2.50 through eight games.
Core Jackson and
Austen Roellig each chipped in a pair of hits and
Tyler Quinn had a team-best three RBI. That duo plus
Kaden Carpenter each doubled in the game, while Jackson tripled in the first inning.
Utah scored a run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. Jackson opened the offense with a one-out triple in the first inning, scoring on a sac fly off the bat of Quinn. Carpenter logged Utah's second run with a double and eventual safety squeeze from
Santino Panaro. Then in the third, Roellig knocked in
Jake Long with a single to right field.
The bats quieted down a little for the next three innings, but during that time Jones and Fine held down the fort on the mound—combined with some nice defensive plays behind them. Fine came on in a pressure situation with the bases loaded in the sixth but quickly used a fly ball to get out of the jam.
The Utes' 3-0 lead remained until the seventh inning, when Long Beach State pushed one across.
In the seventh the home team added two more runs, loading the bases with nobody out thanks to a pair of hit batsmen and a walk. In an eight-pitch battle, Jackson followed by grounding into a fielder's choice as Panaro came in to score. Long followed with an RBI single to give Utah a 5-1 lead after seven innings of play.
Eight batters came up to the dish in the eighth inning with Utah plating four runs.
Matt Flaharty and Jackson had back-to-back RBI singles and Quinn followed with a two-run double to close out the scoring for the afternoon.
A one-out single was all for the Dirtbags in the top of the ninth as Elder sealed the victory.
