The First Pitch: Things to Know
The Utah baseball team visits a familiar foe on Tuesday night for a non-conference tilt as the Utes take on former Pac-12 foe California at Stu Gordon Stadium. It'll be the final matchup for Utah before beginning Big 12 Conference play for the first time.
- Utah is 11-4 on the season and remains in the Bay Area following a three-game series at San Jose State this past weekend. The Utes dropped a 2-1 pitcher's duel Friday despite a complete game effort from Colter McAnelly, bounced back on Saturday with a 5-3 victory and fell in the rubber match of the series.
- In last year's series between Utah and Cal, the Utes took two of three inside Stu Gordon Stadium powered in part by a 5-for-13 line from Drake Digiorno and a 4-for-12 weekend for outfielder Kaden Carpenter. Digiorno homered and scored four runs, while eventual Detroit Tigers signee Micah Ashman had a two-inning save.
- Overall, Cal had Utah's number during the schools' time together in the Pac-12 Conference, as the Golden Bears went 26-10 against Utah from 2012-24.
- Despite the series setback against San Jose State, shortstop Core Jackson and second baseman Matt Flaharty both hit over .330 for the weekend. Jackson homered in the series opener among his four hits, scoring three runs.
- McAnelly struck out eight Spartans in the Friday night opener, before fellow right-hander Merit Jones tossed eight innings on Saturday and fanned six—on the way to a series-evening victory.
- The Utah bats hummed right along the first four weekends—as a club, Utah is hitting .304 which ranks fifth in the Big 12 and No. 55 in the country. It has been keyed by 43 doubles; leading the Big 12 Conference. Georgia Tech (50) leads the country entering this week.
- Headlining the offense has been Jackson, the two-hole hitter who is riding a 10-game hitting streak. The native of Wyoming, Ontario, boasts a team-best .433 batting average (fourth in the Big 12) while also owning Utah's top slugging percentage (.667), runs scored (17) and total bases (40).
- Flaharty has started all 15 games at second base, bumping his batting average by more than 80 points from a season ago (.282 to .365). He has held down the leadoff spot in the batting order for much of the season to date, stringing together a .365 average with 11 RBI and a team-leading seven doubles.
- Defensively, Gary Henderson's club has been one of the cleanest in the country with just eight errors on the season, the second-fewest in the Big 12. The team has a .985 fielding percentage, again tabbing No. 2 in the Big 12 and ranking ninth nationally. The Utes have gone error-free in eight games and had only one miscue in six games.
- After Tuesday night's matchup with California, the Utes will head to the Little Apple to begin their first Big 12 Conference series. It'll be a three-game set with Kansas State running from March 14-16 at Tointon Family Stadium.
