SAN JOSE, Calif. –
Colter McAnelly went eight strong innings on the mound and
Core Jackson hit his second home run of the season, but the Utah baseball team fell 2-1 to San Jose State in a series-opening pitcher's duel at Excite Ballpark on Friday.
McAnelly struck out eight Spartans while scattering six hits to lower his season ERA to 2.16 for the Utes (10-3). Jackson's solo home run to right in the sixth pulled Utah within a run, but six runners were left stranded, including three that could have accounted for the potential game-tying run.
Utah had its best chance to knot the score in the eighth.
Matt Flaharty singled and stole second to put a runner in scoring position with two down until a strikeout ended the threat.
Austen Roellig and
Jake Long added base hits for the Utes as they could only register the Jackson extra-base hit on the afternoon.
