SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Utah baseball team bounced back on Saturday afternoon, taking down San Jose State by a 5-3 score in game two of the three game series with the Trojans.
The Utes improved to 11-3 with the victory.
Utah trailed 1-0 after two complete innings of play. The Utes answered in the top of three with Derek Smith starting the inning off by drawing a walk. The next two Utes laid down bunts and both were able to reach on fielder's choices to load the bases up. Core Jackson was able to score Smith with his at bat to give Utah a run and tie the score at one.
With a runner on third, Tyler Quinn singled up the middle for an RBI to give the Utes a 2-1 lead. San Jose State was able to answer and tie it back up in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the fifth Matt Flaharty singled to right field for an RBI to give Utah the one run edge. The Spartans didn't let the lead stand long as they put up a run in the bottom of five to tie it up.
The two teams were in a standoff the next two innings with neither team finding an edge on the scoreboard.
In the top of the ninth, Santino Panaro reached on an SJSU fielding error and was able to advance to third thanks to a single to right field from Jackson. SJSU made a pitching change and put Tyler Albanese on the mound. Jackson then stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Utah. Albanese then balked to score Panaro and advanced Jackson to third.
Quinn was able to score Jackson, grounding into a fielder's choice, and Utah claimed a 5-3 edge heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Merit Jones (2-0) pitched eight complete innings for Utah and drew six strikeouts. Cameron Nielson came in to close for Utah in the bottom of the ninth and struck out the first batter he faced. Utah's defense locked in for two more quick outs for a three-up, three-down inning to give Nielson his second save and the Utes the 5-3 victory over SJSU.
