SAN JOSE, Calif. — The Utah baseball team dropped the rubber game against San Jose State on Sunday, falling by a final score of 8-5 at Excite Ballpark in San Jose to conclude the three-game series.

Cal Kilgore highlighted the Utes at the plate as Flaharty tallied a pair of doubles and drove in a run while Kilgore recorded a season-high two RBI and went 2-2 at the dish with a walk.
Both teams scored the majority of its runs early in the game as nine of the game's 13 runs were scored before the fifth inning.
The Utes jumped on the board first with a three-run second inning, two of which were scored with two outs.
Kaden Carpenter was the first to reach base with a one-out walk before
Jake Long lined a single into center field to put two on. Utah scored its first run after a double steal attempt resulted in a run as the Spartans' catcher picked up a throwing error. In the ensuing at-bats, Kilgore and Flaharty both added two-out hits as Kilgore plated Long and Flaharty doubled to score Kilgore.
It didn't take long for San Jose State to respond as Jeriah Lewis blasted a two-run homer to record a team-leading third big fly of the season, cutting Utah's lead to 3-2.
The Spartans added two more runs in the home half of the third inning as back-to-back doubles led to San Jose State's first lead of the game, 4-3.
The Utes quickly snatched the lead back in the fourth inning as the first two Utes were retired but the next four Utah hitters reached base safely. Santino Panara jump started the inning by reaching on a fielding error before stealing second and advancing to third on an error. Kilgore tied the game with an RBI single and later scored following a walk drawn by Flaharty and an RBI single off the bat of
Core Jackson, putting the Utes in front 5-4.
In the fifth inning, the home team took the lead right back as the first three batters reached to load the bases. Following a sacrifice fly and a sacrifice bunt, the Spartans gained a slight edge on the scoreboard.
The Utes remained quiet offensively throughout the rest of the game, unable to knot things up. San Jose State added some insurance runs in the eighth inning to give themselves an 8-5 advantage, eventually securing the series with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
The Utes kept their bullpen active as seven relievers made an appearance while
Ian Culver (L, 0-2) received the loss.

The Utes will stay on the road to take on a familiar foe in California in Berkeley, Calif. on Tuesday, March 11. Utah will then head straight to Manhattan, Kan. to start Big 12 action with a three-game series against K-State.
