BOISE, Idaho – Four different players picked up multiple hits and
Hailey Deter smacked her first home run as a Ute as the University of Utah softball started their Friday with a 7-2 win over the Idaho State Bengals, but then were dealt a 10-1 loss by the Boise State Broncos on the first day of the Blue Collar Classic at Huber Field in Boise Idaho.
A win and a loss leave Utah's record at 7-16
Utah vs. Idaho State
The Bengals got on the board thanks to an Ava Brown RBI single in the first and that lead held through the first three innings, but Utah's offense found life in the fourth. A walk, an error and a single loaded the bases with one out in the fourth and
Kendall Lundberg drove in the Utes' first run with a sacrifice fly. The next batter was
Hailee White and when she slapped a single into right, Deter came across with the go-ahead run.
In the fifth, Utah staged another rally to extend their lead to 5-1 and
Reese Lee lit the fuse with a one out double.
Kaylah Nelsen plated Lee with a single and, two batters later,
Jolie Mayfield doubled in another run. Lundberg completed the scoring in the frame by drawing a bases-loaded walk.
A little more insurance was added by the Utes in the seventh, when Deter rocketed a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right-center for her first homer of the year.
On the mound,
Brooklyn Carreon,
Shelbee Jones and Hailee Maestretti prevented ISU from matching Utah's scoring. Carreon got the start and allowed only a single earned run in 3 1/3 innings. Jones then recorded five outs while limiting the Bengals to just one more run on one hit before turning things over to Maestretti. The freshman lefty collected the last six outs to notch the first save of her career.
Utah's hurlers also benefitted from four double plays turned behind them, the program's highest single game total since they also recorded four double plays on May 28, 2016 vs. Florida State.
Utah vs. Boise State
Utah's second game of the day started with a scoreless first, but four Boise State hits, including a home run, staked the Broncos to a 4-0 lead after two frames.
That difference was cut to three in the top of the fourth, when Nelsen doubled and dashed home on a Deter single, but another Boise State offensive eruption occurred in the bottom of the fourth, upping their lead to 10-1. The Utes were retired in order in the fifth to bring the contest to an end.

The Utes will be on the field once on Saturday, squaring off with Boise State at 12 p.m.
