Core Jackson Named to Brooks Wallace Award Watch List

Senior is one of seven Big 12 shortstops to receive midseason honor
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – University of Utah senior Core Jackson was named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List on Friday, as released by the College Baseball Foundation. The award recognizes the most outstanding shortstop in Division I baseball.
Jackson is one of 100 shortstops on the watch list and one of seven from the Big 12 Conference.
The native of Wyoming, Ontario, has been the heartbeat of the Utah offense this season, starting 31 games and slashing .415 / .484 / .711 with 14 doubles, eight home runs, 11 walks, 33 RBIs, 42 runs scored and 12 stolen bases.
He leads the Utes in most offensive categories and is among the Big 12 leaders in hits (1st – 56), batting average (2nd), doubles (2nd), slugging (3rd), runs scored (T-3rd), total bases (4th – 96), and OBP (5th).
His three doubles at California Baptist on Feb. 28 remain tied for the most this season by a Big 12 player.
Jackson has been equally impressive in conference play, tallying a .746 slugging percentage against Big 12 clubs to rank third in the league. He also shares the top spot with 22 runs scored in league action.
Defensively, Jackson has flashed the leather and showed incredible range at shortstop. When D1Baseball.com released its midseason position-by-position rankings, Jackson was listed as the No. 13 shortstop but his fielding percentage was tied for the best among that top-13 group at the position.
The Brooks Wallace Award will be presented by the College Baseball Foundation later this year. It is named for former Texas Tech shortstop Brooks Wallace, who played for the Red Raiders from 1977 to 1980. Wallace died of leukemia at the age of 27.
