Utes Win Home Opener 6-1 over Bengals

SALT LAKE CITY— The University of Utah men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 6-1 victory over the Idaho State Bengals Friday afternoon.

DOUBLES
The Utes started the match strong by taking the doubles point. Newcomer Balthazar Huss and captain Dante Teramo battled to pick up a 7-6(3) win over Idaho State's Lewie Bouman and Sep de Visser on the No. 1 court.

Idaho State didn't let this bother them as they pushed the next two matches into tiebreaks as well. Utes' Lorenzo Esquici and Simeon Terziev took a 7-6(5) victory over Idaho State's Tyler Dalos and Quentin Lamothe at the No. 2 spot.

As the Utes clinched the doubles point, Utah's Emmett Potter and AJ Deem led their tiebreaker 3-2, but the match was ultimately left unfinished.

SINGLES
In singles action, Teramo picked up the first singles point of the match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over the Bengals' de Visser in the No. 1 spot. Deem was not far behind as he picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win over ISU's Lamothe at the No. 6 court.

At the No. 2 spot, Potter won 7-6(2), 6-2 over the Bengals' Ciguenza to clinch the Utes' home opener win.

The rest of the matches played on, Huss notched his first win as a Ute, picking up a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 over the Bengals' Jack Calleri at the No. 5 spot.

Terziev finished off the matches of the day on the No. 4 court with a 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3 win over Dalos.

Esquici retired after picking up a 6-0 win in the first set but fell 6-7(4) in the second set to Bouman before retiring due to injury at the No. 3 spot.

The Utes are now 1-2 on the season.

UP NEXT
The Utes will face Northern Arizona in the George S. Eccles Center Sunday Feb. 1 at noon before traveling to Colorado to face Denver on Feb. 6.
