NEW YORK – After a 5-for-12 week at the plate that included three homers and six RBIs,
Mia Gomez was named Softball on SI's Freshman of the Week on Tuesday and, for sweeping then-No. 21/22 Arizona State, the University of Utah softball team earned the publication's Team of the Week award.
Gomez was lethal at the plate all week, starting on Wednesday against Southern Utah, when she homered and scored twice. In the middle game of Utah's set with ASU, the California native went yard again and drove in three and her third long ball of the week came leading off the finale. Gomez ended the week with an 1.167 slugging percentage and she reached base in all four games, extending her on-base streak to 26 games, the longest of any freshman in the nation.
Utah's team of the week award comes after a 4-0 showing in which they accomplished a number of things they hadn't done in a while, including scoring 18 runs and homering five times on Wednesday against SUU. Their sweep of ASU was the program's first sweep of a ranked team since 2023 and the 35 runs they scored were the most Utah has put up in a series of three games or less since 1996.
This is Gomez's second freshman of the week award in 2026. She was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week on Feb. 17.
