Fifth-year wide receivers coach Guy Holliday is a 27-year veteran of college coaching, including more than two decades coaching receivers and six years as an offensive coordinator.
Holliday's wide receivers in 2019 played a key role for an offense that led the Pac-12 in passing efficiency (174.05) and completion percentage (72.6%) en route to a second consecutive Pac-12 South title. The Utes ranked second in the FBS and broke the Pac-12 record for completion percentage, while ranking eighth in passing efficiency. Utah topped the 500-yard mark for total offense five times, their most since 2005, and scored 30 or more points 10 times, the most since 2008.
In 2017, Holliday coached Darren Carrington II to second-team All-Pac-12 honors for Utah in a season that saw Carrington crack the school single-season top 10 in receptions (70) and yards (980). Tim Patrick had his most productive season under Holliday’s coaching in 2016, leading the team in receptions (45), yards (711) and touchdown catches (5). Patrick made the Denver Broncos’ roster as an undrafted free agent.
Holliday came to Utah from BYU, where he coached the receivers from 2013-15, among them Cody Hoffman, the leading receiver in school history. The Cougars finished No. 21 nationally in passing offense in 2015 (296.5 yards per game) and No. 26 in 2014 (278.7 yards per game).
Holliday’s other FBS stops were at Western Michigan (2000-02), Mississippi State (2003-06) and UTEP (2008-12). He also coached at Clark-Atlanta (1991), Tuskegee (1992-94), Alabama State (1995 and 1998-99) and Cornell (2007).
In 2008, Holliday worked with the nation’s No. 14-ranked passing offense at UTEP and the Miners ranked 20th in passing offense in 2009. Earlier in his career, he helped Western Michigan win the 2000 Mid-American Conference Western Division title. As the offensive coordinator at Alabama State in 1995 and from 1998-99, the Hornets were one of the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s top passing teams. Holliday was also the offensive coordinator at Tuskegee, which ranked in the top 10 in passing offense all three years he was the offensive coordinator.
Holliday has had 22 wide receivers sign with NFL teams, including former Ute Patrick, BYU’s Hoffman and Mitch Mathews; UTEP’s Jeff Moturi, Kris Adams, Donavon Kemp and Jordan Leslie (who also played one season for Holliday at BYU); Mississippi State’s Justin Jenkins, Lance Long and Brandon McRae; Western Michigan’s Kendrick Mosley, Corey Alston, Greg Jennings and Tony Scheffler; Alabama State’s J.J. Huggins, Reggie Barlow and Damon Hodge; Clark-Atlanta’s Chuck Evans and Millard Hamilton; Tuskegee’s Chris Holder and Anthony Mitchell; and Cornell’s Bryan Walters.
Holliday also has coached four all-conference players at previous FBS stops: Mississippi State’s Jenkins, Western Michigan’s Mobolaji Afariogun (at tight end) and Steve Neal and UTEP’s Moturi.
