Norm Chow, recognized as one of the top offensive coaches in college football, became Utah's offensive coordinator on January 22, 2011. He will also coach the tight ends.
Chow brings 38 years of coaching experience to the job, including 35 years as an NCAA assistant coach and three years as an NFL assistant. He was most recently at UCLA, where he spent the last three seasons as the Bruins' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
A three-time national Assistant Coach of the Year, Chow has served as the offensive coordinator for three national championship teams (Brigham Young, 1984; USC 2003 and 2004). One of the game's most credentialed quarterbacks coaches, he has tutored three Heisman Trophy winners (Ty Detmer, Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart) and six NFL first-round draft picks (Palmer, Leinart, Philip Rivers, Steve Young, Jim McMahon, Marc Wilson). Young is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Chow also has an NFL Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowl quarterback to his credit. While the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans (2005-07), Chow helped Vince Young transition from college to professional football. In his first NFL season in 2006, Young became only the second quarterback to win AP Offensive Rookie of the Year honors and he was the first rookie quarterback to play in the Pro Bowl. Tennessee's run game also fared well under Chow and the Titans finished fifth in the league in 2006 in rushing (2,214 yards) while setting a franchise record for yards per carry (4.7). In his last season as Tennessee's offensive coordinator, the 2007 Titans won 10 games and earned a spot in the NFL playoffs.
Chow went to the NFL after a highly-successful four-year term as the offensive coordinator at USC from 2001-04. In 2002, Palmer, the first of two Trojan Heisman Trophy winners under Chow, became the first selection in the NFL draft. Palmer left USC as the Pac-10's career record holder in passing yards and total offense. In 2003, with Leinart calling the signals, the Trojans set the Pac-10 record for points in a season (534). In 2004, Leinart won the Heisman Trophy and was named the Walter Camp Player of the Year and repeated as a first-team All-American while leading the Trojans to their second straight national title.
Chow's road back to his alma mater--he lettered for Utah from 1965-67, starting two seasons and earning first-team all-Western Athletic Conferences as a senior (he was later named to Utah's All-Century team)--included stops at BYU (1973-99), North Carolina State (2000), USC (2001-04), the Tennessee Titans (2005-07) and UCLA (2008-10).
Chow's first coaching job was as the head coach at Waialua High (Hawaii) from 1970-72. He then began a 27-year stint at BYU, serving in a variety of capacities, including assistant head coach, offensive coordinator, co-offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach, receivers coach and recruiting coordinator. He called the offensive plays at BYU from 1982-1999 and was the offensive coordinator his last four seasons at the school. The Cougars posted a 244-91-3 record during his time in Provo, appeared in 22 bowls and saw 21 offensive players earn All-America honors. Brigham Young ranked in the nation's top 10 in total offense in 12 of Chow's 18 years as offensive coordinator.
His honors include: the Broyles Award (2002) as the nation's top assistant coach, National Assistant Coach of the Year (1999) by the American Football Foundation and Athlon (1993), and the NCAA Division I-A Offensive Coordinator of the Year (1996 and 2002) by American Football Monthly. He served as the grand marshal of the 2004 Golden Dragon Parade celebrating the Chinese New Year in Los Angeles' Chinatown.
