SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Utah men's tennis team competed in the BYU Intercollegiate Championship this weekend. The Utes had both some unexpected success and some unexpected disappointments. This was Utah's third tournament of the season, and they have been competitive in each of them. The Utes have had one of their players in the finals of either doubles or singles competition in every tournament this year. Coach F.D. Robbins' pre-season worries of his team being amateur and inexperienced seem to be nothing but, well, worries.
The nation's 32nd-ranked doubles team, Utah's Coates and Rodrigue were seeded second going into the tournament. They won the tournament title by defeating Calvo and Ward, 8-4.
In singles play, BYU's Manuel Calvo defeated Gert Vilms to win the tournament title. Calvo won in two sets, 6-3, 6-2. Utah's Ben Coates was seeded second, but failed to advance past the third round when he lost to Vilms, 6-1, 6-3. The Utes' Philippe Rodrigue was seeded fourth in the tournament and advanced to the semi-finals. He was defeated by top seeded Manuel Calvo, 6-3, 6-2.
