SALT LAKE CITY - Football coach Ron McBride has decided to remain at the University of Utah. McBride, who just finished his ninth season as head Ute coach, has withdrawn his name from consideration for the opening at Hawaii.
"I haven't finished what I came here to do," said McBride. "At this point in my career, it was good for me to look into another job and make judgments about what I'm doing and if it's best for me. The process helped me re-identify my thoughts and rejuvenate me. There were some areas addressed by (Utah Athletics Director) Chris Hill that made a difference in my decision."
Hill is happy McBride chose to stay at Utah. "I'm excited that Mac has decided to remain our coach. I told Ron we would continue to give him the support he needs to succeed. I'm excited about his renewed enthusiasm and his commitment to take this program where we want it to be. I feel great about the conversations I've had with Coach McBride this week and am looking forward to the future of Utah football under his direction."
McBride's 62-43 record is the second best ever at Utah and he is one of just two coaches in school history to win 50 games. The 1998 Utes went 7-4 to extend McBride's string of winning seasons to six. He has had just one losing season (1990, his first) and has averaged seven wins per year in his nine years. He has taken Utah to four bowl games, making him the only coach in school history to go to more than one bowl. Utah tied for the 1995 Western Athletic Conference championship.
"My idea when I came to Utah was to compete for the league championship, to beat BYU on a regular basis and to go to bowls," said McBride. "We got that done. Now we need to win the conference championship outright. We've had opportunities the last few years, but fell short. The bar has been raised on what we need to do to be viewed as successful at Utah. We have a good team returning and we hope to gain an edge with our recruiting. However, I plan to take a look at the way we do some things and coach some things in order to win in our new, more competitive conference (the Mountain West Conference). Right now our football team has a good attitude and work ethic, but there are areas where we can improve. We will tighten up our study table and tie up some loose ends. I plan to make the players totally accountable, rather than 90 percent accountable, in all facets of school and football."
