SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (AP) - Daniel Jones caught 13 passes for 197 yards and quarterback Darnell Arceneaux, out for a month with a broken finger, rushed for the deciding touchdown as Utah beat Fresno State 24-16 on Saturday.
Utah (4-2, 2-1 Western Athletic Conference) won for the first time in four weeks, while Fresno State (1-5, 1-2 WAC) failed to score on two drives in the final six minutes of the game and suffered its fourth single-digit loss of the year.
Arceneaux replaced Jonathan Crosswhite late in the third quarter and directed a 44-yard drive that ended with Arceneaux's 5-yard touchdown run. But the sophomore was hit hard as he scored and left Rice-Eccles Stadium in an ambulance with a possible concussion.
After sputtering most of the afternoon, Fresno State's offense drove deep into Utah territory twice in the closing minutes only to turn the ball over on downs. Utah defensive end John Frank batted down Billy Volek's pass with 56 seconds to play to seal the win.
Jones' 13 catches were the third-most in Utah history. Anderson, the WAC's leading rusher, ran for 124 yards in his fifth 100-yard game of the season.
Crosswhite was 14-for-17 for 187 yards and Volek, who leads the WAC in passing efficiency, was 26-for-28 for 263 yards. Smith caught eight passes for 117 yards for the Bulldogs.
The Utes dominated the first half with a commanding offensive performance. Utah controlled the ball for 19:58 of the half and made three run-oriented, time-consuming drives that resulted in touchdown runs by Mike Anderson and Omar Bacon and a 31-yard field goal by Ryan Kaneshiro.
Fresno State scored 10 points in the final 101 seconds of the second quarter to cut Utah's halftime lead to 17-10. The Bulldogs got a field goal with 1:41 to play and, after forcing a Utah punt, drove 63 yards in the final 1:06, getting 1-yard touchdown dive by Volek with no time on the clock.
A fumble deep in Bulldogs territory killed the Utes' first drive of the second half, and Fresno State punter Jeff Roberts threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Charles Smith that cut the Utah lead to 17-16 midway through the third quarter.
