ORLANDO, Fla. - Phil Glover, a senior linebacker for the University of Utah, has been named to the 1998 Butkus Award Watch List, the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando has announced. Glover, a 1997 first-team all-WAC pick, is one of 68 candidates for the award, which goes to the nation's top linebacker. An independent committee of media members selects the Butkus Award nominees and eventual winner.
The initial watch list will be trimmed to 10 semi-finalists on October 15. The three finalists will be announced via a national teleconference on November 12, with the winner being announced on Fri., Dec. 11, 1998 at the Butkus Award Gala, sponsored by Joyner SportsMedicine Institute, Inc., at Universal Studios Florida.
Glover, a 6-0, 237-pound senior, plays the "rover" position. Utah's strongest, fastest linebacker runs a 4.48 40, squats 522 pounds and benches 432 pounds. He has a team-best 38" vertical jump. Last year, Glover was twice named Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week and he was voted Utah's defensive MVP. He had 90 tackles (7 for loss) and four sacks.
