This Week:
The Utah men's tennis team kicks off it's regular season schedule by
hosting matches against Utah State and Weber State. The Utes play
the Aggies on Sat., Jan. 29 at 6:00 p.m. and then the Wildcats on
Mon., Feb. 2 at 6:00 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Eccles
Tennis Center. Last year, Utah posted a 4-1 record against instate
schools. Their one loss came against BYU splitting the two-game
season series with the Cougars. The Utes defeated both Utah State
and Weber State last year by a 6-1 score.
Utes to Watch:
Many individual Utes performed well in the preseason. Utah
participated in four tournaments and had several individuals with
noteworthy results. The highlight of the preseason was the play of
doubles combo Ben Coates and Philippe Rodrigue. At the Rolex Region
VII Tournament, Coates and Rodrigue advanced through a field of 32
teams and won the doubles title. This win gave them a birth in the
Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Feb. 4-7.
Coates and Rodrigue posted a 19-3 record in the preseason and earned
a No. 1 ranking in Region VII and No. 13 national ranking. Coates has
also gained recognition for his singles play. He advanced to the
finals of the Boise State and the Bulldog Classic Tournaments, and
compiled a 16-4 preseason ranking. He is ranked fourth in Region VII
and 86th nationally. Four players besides Coates posted winning
records in the preseason tournaments. Ryan Snow compiled 12 wins
paired with only five loses while Philippe Rodrigue earned a 8-4
mark. Newcomer Ryan Ferguson, who transferred from Weber St., was
7-6 while Adam Eke also hit for a 7-6 record.
Last Week:
The Utes were slated to commence the regular season on Jan. 23,
against Montana State. Unfortunately, Montana State canceled it's
Utah road trip annulling matches against BYU and Utah. These matches
will not be rescheduled.
Looking Ahead:
Following this two game home stand, the Utes depart for consecutive
day matches against Arizona and Arizona State. Utah faces the
Wildcats on Feb. 8 at 1:00 p.m., then it takes on the Sun Devils on
Feb. 9 at 1:30 p.m..
