SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team won its first WAC match of the season on Saturday, dropping the visiting UTEP miners, 6-1. The Utes improved their record to 6-1, on the year, and 1-3 in the conference.
Utah swept all three matches to take the doubles point. Ben Coates and Philippe Rodrigue, who are currently ranked 15th in the nation, won their nineteenth match of the year, and their sixth in a row, defeating Loure Brajkovic and Osvaldo Biffe, 8-4. At No. 2 doubles, Trevor Ferguson and Kevin Zenger downed Pawel Malinski and Sebastien Glizler, 8-6, while Ashler Dyer and Nik Yip topped off Diego Garza and Edward Moreno, 8-5, at the No. 3 position.
UTEP picked up one win in singles play, at the No. 4 slot where Malinksi defeated Ferguson, 6-3, 6-4. Utah won the other five matches, although four of them were decided in the third set. Coates downed Brajkovic, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6, at No.1 as Rodrigue outlasted Biffe, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 at No. 2. At the third position, Dyer beat Garza, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, while Eke squeaked by Glinzler, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 at No. 5. Zenger was the only Ute to win in straight sets, defeating Moreno, 6-2, 6-1.
Utah has one day off, and then it returns to the hardcourts on Monday to host Sacramento State. Matches begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Eccles Tennis Center. Admission is free.
