SUNNYVALE, Calif. - Utah won three games Saturday to advance to Sunday's semifinals of the National Invitational Softball Tournament at the Twin Creeks Softball Complex.
Despite losing to Cal Poly SLO, 5-3, late Friday night, the Utes advanced to the tournament's championship bracket on Saturday. Utah defeated sixth-ranked Arizona State, 2-1, in eight innings. After the Sun Devils scored the first run of the game in the top of the eighth, Utah came back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Michele Larsen was placed on second to start the inning as part of the tie-breaker procedure and was driven in on a single to center by Molly McLean, who advanced to third on a the throw home. McLean then scored on a throwing error by the catcher. Kristin Arbogast gave up just six hits in the complete game effort to get the win.
Utah beat Arkansas 6-0 in the second game. The Utes broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the first. Sarah Farnworth hit her second home run of the season to center field in the second. She went 2-for-3 at the plate and got the win on the mound, giving up just three hits and striking out 11 in seven innings. Lisa Hashimoto had two stolen bases.
The Utes beat No. 23 Iowa in the quarterfinals, 5-4. Utah scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth and got two more in the fifth, outhitting the Hawkeyes 7-5. Sunny Smith went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Larsen drove in two runs. Kristin Arbogast got her second win of the day to improve to 4-6 on the season. She pitched 5-1/3 innings, giving up four hits, four runs and two earned runs.
Utah plays in the semifinals on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. (PST). The championship game is at 1:00 p.m. (PST).
