SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sarah Farnworth gave up only four hits and Kristin Arbogast pitched a no hitter as Utah swept a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader from San Jose State, 4-1 and 5-0, on Saturday afternoon at San Jose State Field.
Utah scored two runs in the top of the first and added one more in both the fifth and seventh innings to win the opener 4-1. Sunny Smith went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Jenny Monson went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. The Utes outhit the Spartans nine to four. Sarah Farnworth struck out four in seven innings and improved to 8-7. San Jose State committed four errors with its pitcher, Asia Easley, taking the loss to fall to 2-7.
Arbogast faced just one batter over the minimum, with a hit batter as her only blemish in seven innings. She struck out five to improve to 6-9. Farnworth and Smith each hit solo home runs as the Utes pounded out eight hits. Candace Aikin pitched eight innings in the losing effort to fall to 1-8.
Utah improved to 14-16 overall and 2-3 in WAC play while San Jose State fell to 11-30 overall and 2-6 in conference play. The Utes and Spartans will play the final game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m PST.
