SALT LAKE CITY - Utah and Colorado State, braving cool, windy and wet playing conditions, split a Western Athletic Conference softball doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Ute Field. Utah (22-19, 6-5 WAC) used timely hitting to post a 3-2 win in the opener. Colorado State (17-21, 6-11 WAC) pounded out 15 hits to win the second game 12-4.
Sarah Farnworth gave up nine hits in seven innings to post the win in game one. Farnworth struck out six, improving to 13-8. Kyla Kiester surrendered three runs off of four hits in six innings, falling to 2-7 with the loss. None of the runs Kiester gave up were earned as the CSU defense committed three errors.
Utah scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Lyndsey Trevis reached on an error by first baseman Alyson Carter, allowing Jenny Monson and Sunny Smith to score on the play. Carrie Kosderka doubled with one out in the fifth and scored on ball hit by Lisa Hashimoto that was mishandled by Kietster.
Holly Schmillen hit her fifth home run of the season in the top of the seventh for the Rams.
Colorado State hit Ute starter Kristin Arbogast early and often in game two. The Rams had three big scoring innings, posting three runs in the third, four in the fourth and four more in the seventh. Arbogast, who left with one out in the third, gave up seven runs, six earned runs and seven hits. She also walked two and struck out three to fall to 9-11. Farnworth gave up five runs and six hits in 3-2/3 innings in relief.
Tiffany Goudy gave up seven hits in seven innings for CSU to improve to 12-9. The Utes touched Goudy for two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Smith hit her sixth home run of the year a solo shot to left- center field in the sixth inning.
Scmillen and Kelley Spence both went 4-for-5 for Colorado State. Spence also had seven RBI in the game and hit a grand slam home run off Farnworth in the seventh.
"Our pitchers just weren't sharp today," said Ute head coach Mona Stevens. "We also didn't hit the ball real well especially after we got down in the second game. We just have to put that second game behind us and focus on the positive things that we've done as of late. We have a lot of big games coming up in the next two weeks."
Utah plays a single game at Oklahoma State on Friday at 6:30 p.m. (CDT) and a three-game series at Tulsa that begins with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. (CDT).
