SALT LAKE CITY -
The University of Utah football team conducted the second scrimmage of the preseason on Tuesday morning at McCarthey Field. Head Coach Ron McBride held out several players for precautionary reasons, including starting quarterback Darnell Arceneaux, in the 90 minute session.
"We know what Darnell can do and we wanted to get a good look at Jonathan Crosswhite," said McBride.
Crosswhite didn't disappoint, completing 8 of 12 passes for 173 yards and conducting two scoring drives against the No. 2 defense. Crosswhite connected on two long scoring plays-hitting sophomore Chris Christensen for a 49-yard strike and finding a streaking Clifford Russell, a freshman, for a 47-yard completion.
Among the players who sat out nursing bumps and bruises for the Utes were: Arceneaux, wide receivers Daniel Jones and Donny Utu, slot back Boo Bendinger, offensive tackles Doug Kaufusi and Devin Grant, running back Omar Bacon, tight end C.J. Johnson and defensive tackle Mike Thomas. Courtney Richins, who was expected to return punts for Utah this season, missed the scrimmage and will miss the entire season after injuring his knee on August 22. Richins tore his anterior cruciate ligament. The major injury on the defensive side of the ball is to safety Brandon Dart, who has a mid foot sprain and is out indefinitely.
Back from a stint on the injury list is redshirt freshman Thomas Fortune, who looked impressive in his "debut." Fortune bulled his way for a 5-yard touchdown run and knocked down several defenders on another TD during "red zone" drills. Junior college transfer Mike Anderson scored on a 14-yard run.
The No. 1 defense shut down three other quarterbacks who saw action, holding T.D. Croshaw, Scott Styles and Joel Gines to 2 of 7 passing for two yards. Walk-on running back Stewart Carvalho had the best day against the No. 1 defensive unit, rushing for 62 yards on eight carries.
