The Utah football team, now in its third week of spring ball, gears up for its first scrimmage, which will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the McCarthey Practice Fields. The Utes, who began contact drills last week, will hold three scrimmages: April 10, April 17 and April 22. The first two are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., while the third is tentatively scheduled for 3:30 p.m. All scrimmages are open to the public.
TIMES CHANGE
In a departure from the original schedule, Utah's Saturday practices/scrimmages are starting at approximately 10:30 a.m. and the weekday practices are getting underway at about 3:30 p.m. Practice normally runs for two hours. Call Liz Abel at the sports information office (581-3511) for daily practice updates.
SPRING INJURIES
Out for the remainder of spring ball are junior all-conference linebacker Kautai Olevao (subluxated his kneecap on March 30) and starting tight end Andy Kassotis (will have his knee scoped this week). They will both be full strength by fall ... Junior linebacker Howard Christianson has been out with a concussion, but should return sometime this week.
SPRING NOTES
Freshman linebacker Marcus Jones, who originally signed with the Utes as a partial qualifier in 1997, will not be eligible to compete until fall. He will not participate in spring camp ... The two-deep for this week's scrimmage has a few notable changes-some injury related. At quarterback, in the absence of injured starter Darnell Arceneaux, junior college transfer Tony Alvarez has the early lead. Backing him up is junior T.D. Croshaw followed by redshirt freshman Joel Gines. This week's complete depth chart can be found on page two of this release ... Senior Rod Talaeai, a defensive tackle last year, has moved to the offensive line. Talaeai is currently No. 2 at center ... Alvarez has been wearing No. 11 instead of his actual number because practice jersey No. 12 is torn. Walk-on receiver Leroy Shelton has been wearing No. 14 for the same reason.
MCBRIDE SAYS
"We analyze our practices every day with the whole premise being to improve as a team. One area we need to develop is our quarterbacks. They are getting better and making strides. Another key is the combinations in the run game and we're getting better at that. We've worked on pressure by the defense and improving technique. I've liked what I've seen in both those areas. The secondary has been pretty consistent. We're seeing some improvement by younger players like Desmond Davis and Airabin Justin. We're giving our stud linebackers a lot of work, giving them a chance to see a lot of live stuff. Last Saturday we took a stride forward from an intensity standpoint. We're looking forward to our first scrimmage this Saturday, when we'll get a chance to see what guys do in a live situation, that's not controlled. We also want to see how things come together when we mix in the run and the pass. We want to look at the quarterbacks and a couple of the new runners."
