SALT LAKE CITY -
The Ute football team put on an impressive show in its first preseason scrimmage, held Aug. 20 on McCarthey Practice Field. The Darnell Arceneaux-led offense looked especially sharp, with the sophomore quarterback completing all five pass attempts for 83 yards. Arceneaux's long pass was a 41-yarder to senior wideout Jerome Anderson.
The scrimmage, closed to the public, featured plenty of action on both sides of the ball. Junior defensive end John Frank and JC transfer Chuck Pine each recorded a sack and three Utes had tackles for loss (Mike Thomas, Ed Ta'amu and Colby Knight).
Juco transfer Mike Anderson (6-2, 220) lived up to his billing as a top NCAA running back prospect, rushing for 56 yards and three touchdowns on just six carries. Omar Bacon (6-1, 208, Jr.), heir apparent to the starting running back position, rushed twice for 43 yards before exiting with a bruised shin.
But Arceneaux was the main show. In addition to a perfect passing day, he would have likely run for two touchdowns had the coaches not whistled the play dead. Declared Utah's starter in the spring after leading Utah to wins over Rice and Brigham Young in the final two games of 1997, Arceneaux did nothing to hurt his standing. Senior quarterback Jonathan Crosswhite, who started the first nine games of 1997, was 4 of 5 for 36 yards, with a long of 13.
Wide receivers Daniel Jones and Donny Utu sat of the scrimmage out to nurse slight hamstring injuries. Running back Thomas Fortune also sat out (abdominal strain).
Ute Notes
Senior Roy Allen and freshman Patrick Dyson have moved from running back, where they played in the spring, to wide receiver ... first-year sophomore Ed Ta'amu, originally listed as a defensive tackle, has moved to end, where he started in the first scrimmage ... injuries of note are to senior safety Brandon Dart (mid foot sprain, out indefinitely) and JC wide receiver Philippe Wells (hamstring tear) ... the Utes took the morning off on Aug. 21 to move out of the dorms, where they have been staying since Aug. 13 ... double day practices, which will remain closed to the public, go through Aug. 25 ... offensive starting positions still up for grabs are "x" receiver (Jerome Anderson and Donny Utu), slot back (Utu and Boo Bendinger), right guard (Hema Katoa and Todd Jackson) and tight end (Matt Nickel and C.J. Johnson).
