PRACTICE SCHEDULE
Practice times are subject to change. Practice is scheduled for Monday through Thursday, 3:30-5:30 p.m. at McCarthey Practice Field. Call sports information director Liz Abel (581-3511) for daily updates and interview requests.
TO WIN THE WAC
For the Utes to win the WAC Pacific Division they must win their last two games (New Mexico and BYU) and one of these two things must happen: 1) San Diego State must lose twice or 2) SDSU must lose once and BYU must beat UTEP. The three teams would then be 1-1 against each other, but Utah would have a 6-1 divisional record (one of Utah,s league losses was to Mountain Division leader Wyoming) compared to a 5-2 divisional record for both SDSU and BYU.
LAST WEEK
Utah won its first overtime game ever, 34-27 over UTEP, but lost starting quarterback Darnell Arceneaux for the year due to a dislocated shoulder. Arceneaux, who previously missed all or parts of four games with a broken finger and a concussion, was enjoying his best game of the season before the third-quarter injury. He had rushed for a career-high 115 yards and completed 9 of 18 pass attempts for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Senior QB Jonathan Crosswhite assumed the controls and led Utah on two scoring drives, including the game winner in overtime. Utah,s defense shut down UTEP,s running game, allowing the Miners just 53 rushing yards. The Utes kept the Miners out of the end zone on a first and goal situation from the 8-yard line in overtime and Andre Dyson batted down the potential game-tying touchdown pass.
HEAD COACH RON MCBRIDE
Head Coach Ron McBride, in his ninth year at the helm of the Ute program, is its second winningest coach. McBride, 61-42, is one of just two coaches in school history to win 60 games. He is assured of a sixth-straight winning season and he has had just one losing season (1990, his first year). McBride,s teams have averaged seven wins per year. He has taken the Utes to four bowl games and is the only head coach at Utah to go to more than one bowl. He is 1-3 in bowl games. McBride led Utah to the 1995 WAC Championship (tie)Utah,s first title in 31 years. Before accepting Utah,s head coaching position in 1990, McBride served two previous stints on the Hill. He was Utah,s offensive line coach from 1985-86 and its offensive coordinator from 1977-82. He is 5-3 against New Mexico (3-2 in Albuquerque) and 0-0 against Lobo head coach Rocky Long.
SERIES SHORTS
Utah leads 25-12-2 ... this Saturday,s game marks the fourth time in five years Utah and UNM have played in Albuquerque ... Utah has won three straight after losing three in a row from 1992-94 ... UNM knocked off the previously undefeated (8-0) and No. 9 ranked Utes on Nov. 5, 1994 in Albuquerque. Utah returned the favor last year, knocking off the league-leading (and once beaten) Lobos, 15-10 in Salt Lake City ... UNM leads 9-8-1 in Albuquerque, but Utah has won the last two in University Stadium (1995-96).

GRIDBITS
With one home game left on its scheduleBrigham Young on Nov. 21the Utes will set a new season home attendance record. Utah has averaged 37,745 fans in Rice-Eccles Stadiumbreaking the mark of 32,310, set in 1994. The Utah-BYU game will be the Utes, first sell-out in their new stadium. Utah,s biggest home crowd to date was the 44,112 in attendance at the home opener against Louisville on Sept. 12 ... Ute Head Coach Ron McBride claimed career victory No. 60 with his win over San Jose State on Oct. 31. He is one of two coaches in Ute history to win 60 games (61) and the first in almost 40 years (Ike Armstrong won 141 games from 1925-49) ... Utah,s three losses have been by a total of seven points. The Utes led late in the fourth quarter in two of those (Boise State and Wyoming), and were tied going into the fourth quarter at San Diego State ... Utah, which had never played an overtime game before this year, has now gone extra innings in two of the last three games. The Utes lost (21-20) to San Diego State and defeated UTEP (34-27) in overtime.
ARCENEAUX OUT FOR SEASON
Sophomore quarterback Darnell Arceneaux (6-1, 187), who was enjoying his best overall game of the season, dislocated his shoulder in the third quarter against UTEP and will be lost for the rest of the year. Arceneaux will undergo surgery on Wednesday (Nov. 11). He had steered Utah to a 20-17 lead before the injuryrushing for a career-best 115 yards and throwing for 121 yards (9 of 18 passing) and 2 touchdowns. He leaves with a 6-0 record as a starter (3-0 this year). Arceneaux missed three previous games with a broken finger suffered in practice on Sept. 15. He returned against Fresno State, but exited with a concussion. He left the San Jose game early, too, this time after re-injuring his finger. Arceneaux finishes his shortened sophomore season with nine touchdowns (4 rushing, 5 passing), 198 rushing yards and 687 passing yards (114.5 ypg). He completed 43 of 77 pass attempts (.558).
MIKE CHECK
Running back Mike Anderson (6-2, 220), a 24-year-old junior college transfer, leads the WAC and ranks 12th in the nation in rushing, averaging 118.2 ypg. He became just the fourth 1,000-yard rusher in school history on Oct. 31 and now has 1,064 net yards. He should move into second in Utah,s single-season rushing record book at New Mexico this Saturday. Anderson needs just 13 yards to pass former Ute Keith Williams (1,076 in 1991) and 64 yards to overtake Del Rodgers for second (1,127 in 1981). Anderson tied the school record for consecutive 100-yard games of five (first set by Carl Monroe in 1982) with his 163-yard effort against San Jose State on Oct. 31. His string was snapped last Saturday, when he totaled a season-low 63 yards against UTEP. Anderson is one of just two players in school historyand the first in 16 yearsto rush for 100 yards seven times in a season. With two games left, he could still tie the school record of nine 100-yard games in a single season, set by Monroe in 1982. Anderson and Monroe both reached 1,000 yards in eight gamesthe fastest ever by a Ute. Anderson, who has a team-best 10 rushing touchdowns, will tie for third in the U. books with his next TD (with Jamal Anderson and Del Rodgers, who had 11 in 1993 and 1979, respectively). The school record for rushing touchdowns in a season is 13 by Mark Stevens (1984). Utah,s rushing leader in eight of nine games, Anderson leads the team in every rushing category: carries (211), yards (1,064), yards per carry (5.0) and touchdowns (10). His 40-yard touchdown run against San Jose State was his longest run from the line of scrimmage. He is Utah,s leading scorer with 60 points. He has started in every game except Boise State.

RICE-ECCLES STADIUM IN ITS DEBUT SEASON
Utah,s new 45,634-seat Rice-Eccles Stadium opened its gates on September 5 for a game between Utah and Louisville. A crowd of 44,112 broke the old record of 36,250 set against Brigham Young back in 1982 in old Rice Stadium. Although Rice-Eccles stands on the same ground as Rice Stadium (built in 1927 as Ute Stadium), only the south end zone and the field surface (SportGrass) remain. The expansion and rebuilding of the stadium began in June 1997. Work was done throughout the 1997 football season, stopping only on home game days. The actual demolition of Rice Stadium occurred on November 17, 1997. Stadium attractions include the three-level Stadium Box, which has the scholarship box as its first level, luxury suites on the second level and the press area on top. In 2002, temporary bleachers will be brought in to expand the stadium,s capacity to 50,000 for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympic Games.
MAC-QUOTES
"We got the win (over UTEP) despite turning the ball over five times and giving up big plays on defense. Somehow we found a way to win. We came back every time we got down. The overtime thing was big because the players really studded up. Daniel Jones made an absolutely big time play on third down and the defense stepped up on first and eight ... New Mexico presents more problems because of the option. The key to the option is to play your responsibility. We haven,t seen much option in awhile, so that,s a concern ... This is New Mexico,s last chance for respectability. We lost a big game to them in OE94 when they were in a similar situation ... We need to take care of business and win our next two games. San Diego State could lose to anyone because they have no offense. They,ve been living on defense. We need to hope that UTEP doesn,t all of the sudden go into the tank after playing so well against us and coming up empty.0/00
