QUICKLY
Utah football enters a new era this Saturday, when the Utes (1-0) host Louisville (0-1) at 7 p.m. in the first game ever held in Rice-Eccles Stadium. The new stadium seats 45,634. Rice-Eccles Stadium is the newest stadium in the nation by a week Louisville inaugurated its new stadium last Saturday (more on Rice-Eccles Stadium below) ... While a sell-out crowd is expected, reserved and general admission tickets are still available ... The game will be broadcast live on KJZZ TV (Ch. 14) and on K-news radio (570 AM) ... Utah and Louisville are meeting for the second time ever and the second time in as many years. Utah won the series opener last year in Louisville 27-21.
RICE-ECCLES STADIUM KICKS OFF A NEW ERA
Construction was essentially completed on the new 45,634-seat Rice-Eccles Stadium in time for a Labor Day open house. Although it stands on the same ground as the former 32,500-seat Rice Stadium (built in 1927 as Ute Stadium), only the south end zone and the field surface (SportGrass) remain. The expansion and rebuilding of the stadium began in June 1997. Work was done throughout the 1997 football season, stopping only on home game days. The actual demolition of Rice Stadium occurred on November 17, 1997. Stadium attractions include the three-level Stadium Box, which has the scholarship box as its first level, luxury suites on the second level and the press area on top. In 2002, temporary bleachers will be brought in to expand the stadiums capacity to 50,000 for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympic Games.
TICKET TALK
Seats are going fast, but good ones are still available at the Huntsman Center ticket office and all SmithTix locations. A school record 25,000-plus season tickets have been sold for the 1998 home schedulethe largest season ticket sale by 4,000.
LAST WEEK
Utahs defense held Utah State to just 195 total yards and two third down conversions in a 20-12 season-opening victory over the Aggies in Logan. The defense shut out USU in the first and fourth quarters and allowed just one third-quarter TD. The Aggies other points came on a safety and a field goal. The Mike Anderson-led offense racked up 373 net yards and controlled the clock for 36:33. Anderson, a junior college transfer playing his first game at Utah, ran for 150 yards and a touchdown. Sophomore quarterback Darnell Arceneaux completed 13 of 22 passes for 146 yards and also ran for a 20-yard touchdown.
HEAD COACH RON MCBRIDE
Head Coach Ron McBride begins his ninth year at the helm of the Ute program as its second winningest coach. McBride, 56-39, is one of just two coaches in school history to win 50 games. His last five teams have posted winning seasons and he has had just one losing season (1990). McBrides teams have averaged seven wins per year. He has taken the Utes to four bowl games and is the only head coach at Utah to go to more than one bowl. He is 1-3 in bowl games. McBride led Utah to the 1995 WAC Championship (tie)Utahs first title in 31 years. Before accepting Utahs head coaching position in 1990, McBride served two previous stints on the Hill. He was Utahs offensive line coach from 1985-86 and its offensive coordinator from 1977-82. He is 1-0 against Louisville and 1-3 against first-year Louisville head coach John L. Smith.
SERIES SHORTS
Utah won the only game between these two schools 27-21 last Sept. 6 in Louisville.
GRIDBITS
The crowd at this weeks game should set a new attendance record for a home Utah football game. The record is 36,250, set against Brigham Young in 1982 ... Utahs win over USU last week was its first season-opening win in five years. The Utes last won their first game in 1994 (also against Utah State), then lost the season kick-off in 1995 (Oregon), 96 (USU) and 97 (USU) ... This Saturdays game against Louisville is the first of three straight home games for the Utes, who host Hawaii and Boise State on Sept. 19 and 26, respectively ... The Utes are wearing a decal on the back of their helmets with the initials LEWJ in honor of recently deceased U. athletics department employees Linda Edgar and Walter Johnson. Edgar was Utahs longtime coordinator of financial aid and eligibility. Johnson worked as a receptionist at the football center. Both passed away in the summer.

Lost 68-34 at home to Kentucky last week ... allowed 801 yards of offense in a game that featured 1,302 yards of combined total offense ...Junior QB Chris Redman (6-3, 215) was 25 of 44 for 368 yards and 4 TDs (1 interception) ... Two junior receivers (Ibn Green and Arnold Jackson) each went over 100 yards, with 132 and 123, respectively.
MAC-QUOTES
The biggest positive about (last weeks game) was that we won. The defense really studded up and made great plays, especially in the fourth quarter when it counted. Our offense needs to come along. Consistency is again a factor. Well learn a lot off the film that will help our offense. Getting a win in a fairly hostile stadium against a very good teamespecially defensivelywas nice. I got the main thing I wantedhard play for four quarters. It gets us off on a positive start, so it was a very important game for us ... Louisville will come in here really mad and embarrassed after getting trounced by their No. 1 rival. Theyll be in the same frame of mind we were going into our game with them last year. (Head Louisville coach) John L. Smith brought most of his staff with him and this is the third team hes coached against me, so I expect a similar offensive and defensive plan from him. Thats his trademark.
