MORAGA, Calif. - The visiting University of Utah men's tennis team topped St. Mary's, 6-1, Saturday, at Moraga, Calif.. The Utes improve their record to 4-3, while the Gaels drop to 3-4.
Utah started out with a strong effort in doubles play. The Utes picked their first win by the No. 2 team of Ashley Dyer and Nik Yip over Tomas Filipcik and Ernie Mowrer, 8-4. The second came from Adam Eke and Patrick Wallebring who topped Matt Hibbard and Jack Garza, 8-4.
Rex Calaunan and Eric Hom, picked up a win for St. Mary's by defeating Utah's No. 1 team of Ben Coates and Trevor Ferguson, 8-6. The Utes were victors in five of the six singles matches. Coates defeated Calaunan, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in the No. 1 match.
Dyer, at No. 2, continued on his hot streak by downing Hibbard, 7-5, 6-1. The Gaels picked up their one match point at the No. 3 slot as Filipcik upset Ferguson, 6-4, 6-1.
The four, five and six matches were all won by Utah, with wins by Wallebring, Adam Eke, and Ryan Snow. Utah continues its California road trip on Mar. 1 against California, and then against Stanford on Mar. 2.
