SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Mike Anderson scored on a 1-yard run in overtime and Andre Dyson knocked away Texas El-Paso's final pass as Utah won 34-27 Saturday.
UTEP (3-6, 3-3 Western Athletic Conference) won the overtime coin toss and elected to start on defense. Utah (6-3, 4-2 WAC), which rolled up 253 yards on the ground, ran on seven on the eight plays to score the winning touchdown.
UTEP's John Rayborn hit Jimmy Carpenter at the 8-yard line on the Miners' first play in overtime. But after Joseph Polk gained no yards on first down, Rayborn threw three straight incomplete passes. Dyson defended on the last two plays to keep Utah alive in the running for a berth in the WAC championship game.
Anderson, the WAC's leading rusher who had his string of 100-yard games snapped at five, scored on a 16-yard run with 11:53 left in regulation to give the Utes a 27-20 lead. Anderson finished with 63 yards on 21 carries.
UTEP tied the score on Polk's 5-yard touchdown run with 3:08 left.
Utah, which claimed its sixth straight victory over UTEP, had to finish the game without starting quarterback Darnell Arceneaux, who was knocked out with a separated right shoulder in the third quarter. He threw for 121 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 115 yards on eight carries.
Jonathon Crosswhite, who replaced Arceneaux, was 8-of-14 for 93 yards.
Rayborn was 20-of-42 for 346 yards, including an 88-yard TD pass to Keonata Golson, marking the first time a Miner quarterback has passed for more than 300 yards since Pat Hegarty in 1987.
