SALT LAKE CITY -
Utah defensive back Brandon Dart has been granted two additional years of eligibility by the NCAA. He is now a junior in eligibility rather than a senior. Dart, whose first year at Utah was in 1994, has missed the last two seasons with injuries. Last August, he suffered a season-ending foot injury. In 1997, he also incurred a season-ending injury in August-that time to his knee.
Dart was an honorable mention all-WAC strong safety in his only full season, 1996, when he started 10 games and was Utah's second leading tackler with 96. He had a team-high 15 tackles for loss. A top recruit for Utah back in 1993, the Layton, Utah, native (Northridge High) has seen a promising college career sidetracked by injuries from the beginning. As a freshman in 1994, his season was shortened by a back injury. He injured his knee in the first game of 1995-a game in which he had 13 tackles and a 97-yard interception return for a touchdown against Oregon-and he spent the remainder of the year as a redshirt. After being sidelined the last two seasons with injuries, Dart applied for more eligibility from the NCAA and was granted two years.
A healthy Dart improves Utah's situation greatly at safety, where he can play both positions and is an all-conference caliber player. He missed spring ball to finish healing his foot injury from last August, but is expected to be at full strength come the 1999 preseason.
