SALT LAKE CITY -
Utah Head Coach Ron McBride likes what he sees from his 1999 club after four days of practice. The Utes have practiced twice daily since August 13, with the exception of Sun., Aug. 15, when they went just once.
"The defense has been real physical, especially the defensive front," praised McBride, "and the offense has shown good execution. The offense just needs to catch up to the defense physically," added McBride. "The players are in outstanding condition and are taking a very businesslike approach to practice."
Junior quarterback Darnell Arceneaux has shown no signs of the shoulder surgery that cut short his sophomore campaign. While Arceneaux is settled in as the starter, McBride says the backup position is still up for grabs.
"There has been no separation between (junior college transfer) Tony Alvarez and (junior) T.D. Croshaw," said McBride. "We need one of those guys to step up and take that backup spot."
Utah suffered its first injury casualty of the spring on Monday morning, when starting tight end Andy Kassotis went down with a knee injury. Kassotis, a preseason first-team Mountain West Conference tight end, has been diagnosed with a significant sprain to his medial collateral ligament and will be out four to six weeks.
Two players who have responded well since off-season surgery are center Michael Richardson and tight end Tony Dickamore. Both missed spring ball-Richardson due to knee surgery (ACL) in February and Dickamore due to shoulder surgery in January. Richardson has moved to No. 2 at center, behind Steve McKane, while Dickamore is No. 2 at tight end. The first-string tight end is now Matt Nickel with the injury to Kassotis.
Utah will begin practice in full pads on August 17.
