SALT LAKE CITY -
The Ute football team put a close to its annual fall double day drills on Monday and then spent Tuesday taking a look at the results. Head Coach Ron McBride and staff ran the team through a crisp, hour-long situational scrimmage in Rice-Eccles Stadium late Tuesday afternoon. It was the Utes' first outing of the year in Rice-Eccles Stadium.
"The field was in great shape," said McBride of the SportGrass surface that was replanted following the completion of the 1998 season. McBride also liked the shape his team is in, with the exception of some nagging injuries.
"We didn't want to take any chances on getting anyone hurt today but we wanted to put the guys in some specific situations. I thought they did a good job. Darnell (Arceneaux) was nursing a little bit of a sore back so he didn't participate, but we wanted to take a better look at Tony (Alvarez) and T.D. (Croshaw) anyway."
On the sidelines with McBride were starters Steve McKane (sprained knee), Andy Kassotis (sprained knee), John Frank (infected foot) and Donny Utu (hamstring). Defensive lineman Lauvale Sape had arthroscopic surgery on his knee earlier in the day?a knee he injured in Utah's scrimmage a week ago. He, McKane and Kassotis will likely be the slowest to return to action?as they are looking at a recovery period of four to five weeks.
McBride was especially pleased with his team's conditioning during two-a-day practices. "I think it was a pretty easy two-a-days for most of the kids because they came into camp in such great condition. They didn't get real stiff and sore after practice."
Utah's attention now turns to Washington State, its season-opening opponent. Utah and WSU play in Pullman, Wash., on September 4.
"We've spent the last few weeks concentrating on just our offense and defense and making them better," said McBride. "Now our focus is on preparing for Washington State."
